Thomas Burberry founded Burberry in Basingstoke in 1856 at the age of 21, based on the idea that clothing should be designed to protect against the conditions of the British climate. He is the inventor of gabardine, breathable and waterproof. This fabric is a real revolution in weatherproof clothing, which until then was heavy and uncomfortable to wear. During the Second World War he invented the trench coat, with a functional design that included shoulder pads to attach military equipment such as gloves and whistles, D-rings for grenades, windbreak flap and rain flap to allow the water to run off easily. The Burberry tartan motif, which is now a registered trademark, is introduced as a lining for rainwear. But today we are at a new dawn at Burberry, and it was born with the new artistic direction of Riccardo Tisci, who launched a new logo and monogram with Peter Saville. The Italian designer has collected the enormous legacy of the British fashion house with his creative spirit and his entrepreneurial vision in line with the changes in the fashion market, and he gave proof of this with his first collection for Spring/Summer 2019, combining prêt -à-female porter and menswear, urban London inspirations and classic British style.
