MARINE SERRE: FASHION AND UPCYCLING

MARINE SERRE: FASHION AND UPCYCLING

That of Marine Serre is a story that was born in 2017 in the name of ethicsustainability and upcycling. After winning the LVMH prize right in that year, the eponymous founder of the brand started a surprisingly rapid climb towards success, at the point that today she is considered one of the most promising Parisian designers, as well as a stable point of reference for what concerns recycling and reuse within the fashion industry.

The brand’s social engagement clearly developed from the very first collections, with a particular attention on climate change. In fact, it is not by chance that Marine Serre’s production process starts from the restoration of either second-hand or landfill-intended fabrics, that are later assembled together, thus giving life to ever-different garments. The mission is to give another opportunity to clothing pieces that already have a story behind them and that – for this very reason – are still able to tell a new one.

Today, Marine Serre’s headquarter extends over an area of more than 800 m², in a three-floor building around Paris 19e arrondissement: it’s here that the designer and her team collect, repair and put their garments together – often marked by the brand’s iconic half moon logo – in an ever-new mix between sportswear and haute couture, past and future. “Futurewear” is exactly Marine Serre’s motto, which represents the importance of an innovative and forward-thinking look within the fashion system. .

That of circularity is a true key concept for the French brand, the bedrock of its core values. Today, about 50% of Marine Serre’s collections comes from recycled materials, while the remaining percentage involves the use of innovative and sustainable fibers, such as biodegradable yarns. To present her latest 2023-2024 collection, the designer chose the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris, where she installed three eight-meter sculptures, each one made of more than two tons of restored, knotted and compacted garments, intended to be used for the next productions. This is an unmistakable sign that upcycling continues to be a pivotal point in the brand’s creative process, collection after collection.
