Mary Jane è un termine americano per una scarpa chiusa, taglio basso con una o più fascette attraverso il collo del piede.

Tra le ragazze, le Mary Janes sono tradizionalmente indossati con collant o calze, e un vestito o una gonna e camicetta. Tra i ragazzi (meno comune se non nell’adolescenza), le  Mary Janes sono tradizionalmente indossati con calzini, pantaloni corti e una camicia.
La scelta del nome deriva da Mary Jane, la sorella di Buster Brown, personaggio principale del fumetto creato da Richard Outcault nel 1902.

Questo calzaturificio del Missouri, ancora oggi in attività con 450 marchi, studia una lungimirante mossa di marketing: i personaggi del fumetto vengono impersonati da attori reali in sketch nei centri commerciali in giro per il paese. Ancora oggi, Buster Brown, il cagnolino Tige e la sorellina Mary Jane rappresentano sia l’azienda che i modelli di calzature.

In principio fu la bisaccia in pelle appesa alla cintura oppure al collo per mezzo di cinghie o nastri. Inizialmente era un accessorio prettamente maschile ma quando fanno la loro comparsa le tasche, tagliate o applicate sull'abito, la borsa s'impone come accessorio particolarmente femminile.  Successivamente quando fa la sua comparsa la tracolla, che diviene in men che non si dica accessorio indispensabile per  viaggiatori e contadini.

Negli anni Cinquanta si cominciò ad usare il nylon per i costumi da bagno: i primi tessuti in Lastex sono del 1952. In quegli anni i costumi erano degli enormi mutandoni, simili alle coulotte di adesso.

Nadja Swarovski ha organizzato una mostra dal titolo Paris Haute Couture,  dal 2 Marzo al 6 Luglio 2013 all’Hotel de Ville di Parigi.

Questa mostra vuole celebrare l'abito da sera come opera d'arte per ricordare di quando i giovani stilisti parigini si batterono per contestare il carattere in apparenza frivolo dell’abito da sera, sottolineandone l’infinito potenziale artistico.

Nadja Swarovski hosted an exhibition entitled Paris Haute Couture, from March 2 to July 6, 2013 at the Hotel de Ville in Paris.

This exhibition, free of charge, created to tell the clothes, designers and collections over the years have used the unique Swarovski crystals to make unique, frivolous and precious their own creations. A blast from the past and a look at this to honor the most representative creations of the great designers of the last century and to celebrate the indissoluble link between them and Swarovski crystals.
